Notes of Interest:
Richmond is a special place for Steve Park, understandable given that he won here in his Busch rookie season --- when he was driving for the late, great Dale Earnhardt. Park’s stats here are impressive, showing a majority of top-10 finishes.
Park had a respectable run here in 2004 in the #62 Orleans Racing Dodge --- he started 17th and went on to finish 12th.
Park On Richmond International Raceway:
Do you enjoy running at Richmond?
“You hear a lot of times that any new track coming into NASCAR should replicate Richmond. I think people sometimes get tired of the D-shaped 1.5-mile ovals. It’s nice to get to a three-quarter mile track. The racing is good, it’s got two grooves. It goes back to the roots of NASCAR, those half and three-quarter mile tracks to race at. We all look forward to going there.”
The exit of turn two looks tricky – is it?
“Turn two is different from turn four --- turn two is kind of tight at the exit and turn four goes out onto the D-shaped. It leaves you more room to unwind the wheel and come up off turn four. Turn two is kind of tight and you’ll see guys bouncing off the wall when they miscalculate. I think we’re up for the challenge.”
Richmond’s treated you well over the years.
“We always run in the top-10 it seems every time we went there. We won there in ’97 in the Busch car. It goes back to growing up racing on quarter mile, half mile, three-quarter mile, mile tracks and Richmond falls right in there.”
