Steve Park Post Race Report - Atlanta
Race: EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 200 (Race 22 of 25)
Track: Atlanta Motor Speedway
Date: Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005
Started: Ninth
Finished: 34th
Laps Completed/Total Laps: 1/130
It was a premature conclusion to the race weekend for Steve Park and his No. 67 South Padre Island Toyota Tundra team late Saturday afternoon when a hit from another truck on the first circuit of the 130-lap competition sent Park’s truck spinning and then slamming into the outside wall. Other competitors worked to avoid the wreckage. While many succeeded, others ran out of room to run and hit the No. 67 truck, causing one of the trucks to burst into flames. It was a frightening wreck to watch, but a huge sigh of relief swept over the crowd as they watched all of the drivers walk away from the crash.
The wreck ended the day for the No. 67 Bill Davis Racing truck team. It was a huge disappointment for everyone, especially after the team had put forth a great effort in practice and qualifying leading up to the Saturday afternoon competition.
On Friday, Park practiced inside the top 15 all day and wrapped up the final practice session with the seventh- fastest truck on the track, lapping the 1.54-mile speedway in 30.5-seconds at 181.7 miles per hour. Late Saturday morning, he and his South Padre Island team went on to grab the ninth-starting position on the fifth row for the start of the EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 200.
It was a strong prelude to what the Bill Davis Racing team had hoped would result in a strong race, before they were abruptly interrupted. The good news is Park and his No. 67 South Padre Island Toyota Tundra team are going to make a run for the checkered flag again this next weekend at Texas Motor Speedway in the Silverado 350. The 23rd race of the 2005 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season is scheduled to start at 9:15 p.m. ET this Friday, Nov. 4. It will broadcast LIVE, starting at 9 p.m. ET, on SPEED (TV), MRN (Radio) and XM Radio Channel 144.
