Notes of Interest:
Many folks might not realize it but Indianapolis Raceway Park is one of the cornerstones to Steve Park’s illustrious NASCAR career. Not only is IRP a place where Park got to shine before a ravenous race crowd but it is also a link to commonality to the Orleans Racing team when he made a start here in 1995 with Walker Evans Racing. Of course the Evans Family and the Gaughan family have shared many war stories together in off-road racing, and is the team that gave teammate Brendan Gaughan his start on his well-known career.
Park On Indianapolis Raceway Park:
“It’s a great track that’s rich in tradition. In '95 or '96 I drove for Walker Evans. As many know he’s got a long tradition of racing in the off-road series and is a good friend of the Gaughans. He gave me the opportunity to race here in a Dodge and we finished in the top-10. It was a great opportunity. I don’t think a lot of people realize that it was Walker Evans and his race team that springboarded my career into the Busch Series and going to work for Dale Earnhardt in the Cup Series. I always remember and will always be thankful to the whole Walker Evans family and race team.
“In ’97 we ran the Busch car here. I came here as a spectator with Ron Hornaday to watch him run his NAPA Chevrolet in ’96 prior to coming here in ’97. That helped me get a feel for the race track. There’s been a lot of racing here and a lot of famous people have raced here. It’s just great to be able to come here to IRP with its rich tradition in racing to put on another great race.
“We all know that the Nextel Cup guys are in town at the big track (Indianapolis Motor Speedway) and there should be a lot of fans and spectators and a lot of the Nextel Cup guys will come over to watch the race too. It should be a great night here at IRP."
